Very early on in the design process, I knew I wanted to incorporate movement, I just wasn’t sure how. I thought about a pop-up card when suddenly the idea of “motion picture” came to me. Nothing says show biz more than a movie, which itself is a series of still images.
Prototyping
One way of simulating motion is through barrier grid animation. As you pull the card out of it’s semi-transparent sleeve, the black stripes will create the illusion of ‘500’ flashing like paparazzi camera lights.
Final product
Although printing seems straight forward, it might’ve been the trickiest part of this process. The key to this illusion working is having crisp lines, but ink on plastic tends to smudge. I had to work closely with our printing vendor to test out multiple types of plastic that can handle ink as well as adhere to glue to complete the card jacket.
